Kenya-Ethiopia one-stop border post launched to boost trade

NAIROBI, June 8 (Xinhua) — The one-stop border post (OSBP) connecting Kenya and Ethiopia was launched on Tuesday to boost trade and cooperation between the two East African nations, officials said.
Kennedy Nyaiyo, secretary of Kenya's border management secretariat said the border regulatory officials clearing traffic, cargo and persons from the two countries will now undertake exit and entry formalities in a joint and sequenced manner at Moyale town.
"A fully functional OSBP is expected to reduce the border crossing time by at least 30 percent to enable faster movement of cargo and people," Nyaiyo said.
An OSBP is a trade facilitation tool applied at land borders between two adjoining states and refers to the simplified and harmonized legal and institutional framework, facilities, and associated coordinated procedures and processes.
Nyaiyo added that the operationalization of the border post is a step closer to achieving the goal of exponentially boosting trade between the two neighboring nations, as well as promoting regional and economic integration between the East African and Horn of Africa regions.
Mengistu Tefera, special advisor to Commissioner General,Ethiopia Customs Commission, said that the people of Ethiopia and Kenya deserve to tie their economic and social relations under the principle of mutual benefit.
Tefera revealed that the establishment of the OSBP will have a significant role in improving cross-border trade and free movement of people.
