TOKYO: South Sudan’s Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs Mayen Dut Wol and Japanese Ambassador to South Sudan TSUTSUMI Naohiro exchanged letters on September 8 concerning the Juba River Port Development Project, a grant aid project worth 2.93 billion yen.
In South Sudan, the deterioration of the economic situation due to the 20-year civil war has had a major impact on the basic living environment of residents.
The maintenance of dilapidated urban infrastructure has become an urgent task for reconstruction and development.
The Juba River Port Development Project aims to improve the cargo handling capacity of the port by developing berthing facilities and providing related equipment that will contribute to the development of South Sudan’s economic and social infrastructure.
Japan has also been supporting the promotion of infrastructure investment based on the “G20 Principles for Quality Infrastructure Investment.”
At the 8th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD8) held in August 2022, Japan announced that it will work on “high-quality, sustainable infrastructure investment,” of which the Juba River Project will form a part.
