NEWSROOM (ADV) – Kenya police on Tuesday seized heroin weighing 12 kilograms concealed in two radio speakers at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) in Nairobi.
The cargo had been declared as traditional baskets and sandals and was destined for Liberia’s capital Monrovia.
Police said the drugs would fetch a street market price of about 30 million shillings (300,000 U.S. dollars). The narcotics was delivered for export by a clearing agent who is currently under probe.
The seizure came a week after detectives at Kenya’s main airport seized a package of heroin concealed in boxes of lip gloss totaling to 48 pieces.
The consignment was registered to be airlifted from Nairobi to Port Harcourt in Nigeria. No arrest has been made after the seizure.
Police said the seizures were made possible due to extra vigilance at the airport. Cases of drug trafficking have been on the rise in Kenya even as traffickers avoid the highly monitored ports of entry.
Police said the drug traffickers now use roads instead of airports to carry out their illegal trade.
