1 President Uhuru Kenyatta has welcomed the opening of the Kisumu Shipyard, saying the facility will create business and job opportunities for thousands of young people in the country.
2 The president said the facility, under Kenya Shipyards Limited, will foster the growth of primary and ancillary manufacturing industries.
3 He noted that the Kisumu Shipyard will also improve transportation and security on the lake, enhance intermodal transportation, and boost fishing, tourism and other economic activities in the East African region.
4 “Kenya Shipyards Limited‘s role in developing the blue economy is aimed at attracting foreign direct investment and driving domestic direct investment with a long-term cascading effect throughout the national economy,” the president said.
5 President Kenyatta spoke Tuesday as he commissioned the Kisumu Shipyard in the lakeside city.
6 At the same time, the President witnessed the floating of the new MV Uhuru II ferry car built by Kenyan shipbuilding experts and engineers with the support of consultants from Damen Gorinchem, a Dutch shipbuilding and engineering company.
7 100 meters with the capacity to carry up to 22 wagons and an estimated capacity of 2 million liters of crude oil per trip is the first ship made in Kenya by Kenyans, with the successful construction of the MV Uhuru II ship, which will be put into service at the end of this year.
8 At Kisumu Shipyard, President Kenyatta expressed his satisfaction that Kenya has become a pioneering shipbuilding nation in Africa.
9 “It is gratifying to note that during these jobs, young Kenyans have been empowered through the acquisition of critical skills in shipbuilding.
10 “Indeed, integrating youth into the national economic agenda has been a key element of my administration’s development plan, as envisioned in Vision 2030 and the ‘Big Four’ Agenda,” said President Kenyatta .
11 Addressing the official launch of the Kisumu-based Dada Export Processing Zone Limited, which he presided over on Monday night, President Kenyatta encouraged young people to focus on big business instead of limiting their potential.
12 The president praised the young Kenyan owner of the factory that makes garments for the export market, saying the factory has created hundreds of jobs for Kisumu residents.
13 “She has just started operations in her establishment and in less than a month she has 150 employees out of three and her goal is that by December she will be an employer of three thousand people.
14 “That young lady was previously employing casual staff, now she is employing people who are permanent and pensionable,” said President Kenyatta.
15 President Kenyatta noted that the Kisumu shipyard will have the capacity to build, refit, convert, repair and maintain ships, as well as provide maritime services within the Lake Victoria region and other inland water bodies.
16 He stressed that shipbuilding activities will have a broader impact on the economy, including the provision of maritime assets, capabilities, technologies and skills for Blue Economy actors in fisheries, shipping, extractive resources, renewable marine energies, tourism and maritime safety.
17 In this sense, the President urged the governments of the counties of the Lake region to design strategies and take advantage of the economic opportunities generated by the Kisumu Shipyard and MV Uhuru II.
18 “By doing so, it will be possible to unlock the huge commercial potential that abounds within the Lake Victoria basin; and other inland waters, create more employment and empowerment opportunities for our youth, and generate revenue for both the National Government and adjacent county governments,” he said.
19 To catalyze the development of the western region of Kenya, the President announced that the proposed Solar One Limited plant at Kibos in Kisumu has received the necessary government approvals and implementation of the project will begin immediately.
20 “This project is part of other ongoing reforms in the energy sector, which will position Kenya as a world leader in green energy,” said President Kenyatta.
21 Defense Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa said the flotation and subsequent commissioning of MV Uhuru II will have an immediate impact on increasing the volume of petroleum products being transported to Uganda from Kisumu and, at the same time, it will generate more revenue for the government and create jobs for young people.

23 The Chief of the Defense Forces, General Robert Kibochi, thanked the teams of engineers and technicians from both Kenya and the Damen Gorinchem company in the Netherlands who worked tirelessly without rest to deliver the MV Uhuru II project in less than a year.

25 General Kibochi noted that normally the project would have taken three years to complete.
